Overview

**Betaxolol + pilocarpine** is a fixed-dose combination ophthalmic suspension containing betaxolol, a selective beta1-adrenergic receptor antagonist (beta blocker), and pilocarpine, a direct-acting cholinergic parasympathomimetic agent. Betaxolol lowers intraocular pressure (IOP) mainly by reducing aqueous humor production in the eye, while pilocarpine lowers IOP by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor through contraction of the ciliary muscle and widening of the trabecular meshwork. This combination is primarily indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who require more than one ocular hypotensive agent. Clinical studies have shown that the combination is more effective at reducing IOP than either agent alone, with a safety profile generally reflecting the known side effects of beta blockers and muscarinic agonists, such as blurred vision and headache[1][2][6].
