Overview
Betazole is a synthetic small molecule and a pyrazole analogue of histamine that acts as a selective agonist at the histamine H2 receptor. Its primary clinical use is as a diagnostic agent to stimulate gastric acid secretion for the assessment of gastric secretory function. Betazole is used in tests to diagnose conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (characterized by excessive gastric acid production) and gastritis. It offers an advantage over direct histamine stimulation due to its specificity for the H2 receptor, resulting in fewer side effects and eliminating the need for antihistaminic premedication. Betazole increases gastric acid secretion by binding to and activating the H2 receptor on parietal cells in the stomach[1][3][4][6].
