Betula lenta whole is a natural biological extract derived from the sweet birch (also known as black birch) plant, used primarily as a diagnostic allergen. It is employed in percutaneous (skin prick) or intradermal testing to identify patients with hypersensitivity to birch proteins. The extract contains allergenic proteins that, when introduced into the skin of a sensitized individual, cross-link allergen-specific IgE antibodies bound to the surface of mast cells and basophils. This interaction triggers the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators, resulting in a visible wheal-and-flare reaction. This diagnostic tool is essential for confirming allergic rhinitis, asthma, or other allergic conditions triggered by Betula lenta.
