Overview

Betula papyrifera pollen, also known as Paper Birch pollen, is a non-standardized pollen allergenic extract derived from the Betula papyrifera tree, native to North America. It is primarily recognized as a moderate to highly potent allergen responsible for seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS) in sensitized individuals. The physiological effects of exposure include increased histamine release, activation of cell-mediated immunity, and increased IgG production, indicative of an immune response. It is utilized in allergenic testing to diagnose birch pollen allergies. The major allergen identified in birch pollen is Bet v 1, which can cross-react with similar allergens from other trees in the Fagales order.
