Overview

Betula populifolia pollen is a non-standardized allergenic extract derived from the gray birch tree. It is utilized as a diagnostic tool for skin testing to identify patients with birch pollen hypersensitivity and as a therapeutic agent in allergen immunotherapy (hyposensitization). In immunotherapy, the extract is administered in gradually increasing doses to induce immunological tolerance, typically characterized by a shift from a Th2-mediated allergic response to a Th1 or T-regulatory cell response and a reduction in allergen-specific IgE-mediated mast cell activation. It is regulated in the United States as a biologic under a Biologic License Application (BLA) and is often used in combination with other birch species extracts in clinical practice.
