Overview

Betulinic acid is a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid with demonstrated antiretroviral (anti-HIV), antimalarial, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. It is found in the bark of several plant species such as white birch (*Betula pubescens*), ber tree (*Ziziphus mauritiana*), and others. Its anticancer activity is attributed to selective induction of apoptosis in tumor cells via direct activation of the mitochondrial pathway independent of p53 and CD95. Betulinic acid also acts as a TGR5 agonist and has been investigated for its potential cardiovascular role in modulating endothelium-dependent relaxation[2][3][5]. It has been studied in clinical trials for melanoma treatment and dysplastic nevus syndrome[1][7].
