Overview

Bevacizumab + doxycycline is a combination therapy involving bevacizumab, a monoclonal antibody that inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), and doxycycline, a tetracycline-class antibiotic with additional anti-inflammatory and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitory properties. This combination has been studied primarily for ocular neovascular diseases such as corneal neovascularization (CNV) and neovascular age-related macular degeneration. The rationale for combining these agents is that while bevacizumab effectively inhibits VEGF-driven angiogenesis, it can delay corneal wound healing; doxycycline notaphrase only enhances the anti-angiogenic effect but also mitigates delayed wound healing by inhibiting MMPs and inflammatory mediators. Studies have shown that this combination more effectively suppresses CNV than either agent alone, reduces the number of required intraocular injections in macular degeneration, and improves outcomes related to tissue repair[1][2][6].
