Overview

Bevacizumab + etoposide is a combination regimen used primarily in oncology, often as part of multi-drug protocols for the treatment of various cancers. Bevacizumab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody that selectively binds to and neutralizes vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), inhibiting angiogenesis and thereby reducing tumor vascularization and growth. Etoposide is a small molecule cytostatic agent derived from podophyllotoxin that acts as a topoisomerase II inhibitor, inducing DNA strand breaks and promoting apoptosis in rapidly dividing cells. This combination has been studied for use in brain metastases from breast cancer, melanoma, malignant glioma, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, and other solid tumors[1][2][4]. The rationale for combining these agents includes the potential for bevacizumab to normalize tumor vasculature—improving delivery of cytotoxic drugs like etoposide—and their complementary mechanisms targeting both tumor cells directly (etoposide) and their supporting vasculature (bevacizumab)[1][4].
