Overview

This combination therapy consists of bevacizumab, a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody, and fluorouracil (5-FU), a pyrimidine analogue antimetabolite. Developed in the context of clinical research at the University of Nottingham, the treatment is administered via subconjunctival injection to manage recurrent pterygium. Bevacizumab acts by binding to and neutralizing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), thereby reducing the vascularization and inflammation associated with pterygium growth. Fluorouracil provides complementary anti-scarring effects by inhibiting fibroblast proliferation and thymidylate synthase, which prevents DNA synthesis. Together, these agents aim to arrest the progression of early recurrent pterygium and reduce the need for repeat surgical intervention.
