This combination therapy regimen consists of the monoclonal antibody bevacizumab (Avastin), the FOLFIRI chemotherapy backbone (folinic acid, fluorouracil, and irinotecan), and an oral curcumin-containing supplement. Bevacizumab is an angiogenesis inhibitor that targets vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). FOLFIRI is a standard cytotoxic regimen where irinotecan inhibits topoisomerase I and fluorouracil (potentiated by folinic acid) inhibits thymidylate synthase to disrupt DNA synthesis. The addition of a ginsenoside-modified nanostructured lipid carrier containing curcumin (G-NLC) is intended to provide complementary anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory activity. This specific regimen was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT02439385) led by Gachon University Gil Medical Center for the first-line treatment of patients with unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer.
