Overview

Bevacizumab + pegaptanib is a combination of two anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) agents used primarily in ophthalmology for the treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema, and other retinal vascular diseases. Bevacizumab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody that binds all isoforms of VEGF-A, thereby inhibiting angiogenesis and vascular permeability. Pegaptanib is an RNA aptamer that selectively binds to the VEGF165 isoform, blocking its activity. The rationale for combining these agents is to provide broader or more sustained inhibition of VEGF-driven pathological neovascularization and leakage in retinal diseases. This combination has been explored in clinical studies as an alternative or adjunctive approach when monotherapy does not yield optimal results[2][3][4][8].
