Overview

Bevacizumab + verteporfin is a combination therapy used primarily in ophthalmology for the treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. Bevacizumab is a monoclonal antibody that inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), thereby reducing angiogenesis and vascular permeability. Verteporfin is a photosensitizer used in photodynamic therapy (PDT); upon activation by light, it generates reactive oxygen species that damage abnormal blood vessels. The combination leverages the antiangiogenic effect of bevacizumab with the vessel-targeting action of PDT, aiming to improve visual outcomes, reduce retreatment rates, and decrease injection frequency compared to monotherapy[1][2][3][5].
