Overview

Bevasiranib is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) drug designed to silence the genes that produce vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), a protein that promotes blood vessel growth. By inhibiting VEGF-A expression, bevasiranib aims to slow the growth and leakage of abnormal blood vessels associated with conditions such as wet age-related macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema. The drug is administered via intravitreal injection directly into the eye. It was developed by OPKO Health and represents one of the first RNA interference-based therapies to reach advanced clinical trials for ophthalmic diseases[1][3][8].
