Overview

Bevenopran is a peripherally acting μ-opioid receptor antagonist that also acts on δ-opioid receptors. It was developed for the treatment of chronic opioid-induced constipation (OIC). The drug works by blocking the action of opioids in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby alleviating constipation without affecting central analgesia. Bevenopran reached phase 3 clinical trials for OIC but development was discontinued before approval. The original developer was Eli Lilly and Company, with later development by Cubist Pharmaceuticals and subsequently Merck following acquisition[1][2][3][6].
