bexagliflozin

Bexagliflozin is a small molecule antidiabetic drug in the class of sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. It is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Bexagliflozin works by selectively inhibiting SGLT2, a transporter responsible for reabsorbing the majority of glucose from the renal glomerular filtrate in the proximal tubule of the kidney. By blocking SGLT2, bexagliflozin reduces renal glucose reabsorption and increases urinary glucose excretion, thereby lowering blood sugar levels independently of insulin secretion or sensitivity. It was approved by the FDA in January 2023 for use in adults with type 2 diabetes and is not recommended for patients with type 1 diabetes due to increased risk of diabetic ketoacidosis[1][3][4][8].
