Overview

Bexarotene is a third-generation retinoid and selective retinoid X receptor (RXR) agonist used primarily for the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), particularly in patients who have not responded to previous systemic therapies. It works by binding to RXR subtypes (α, β, γ), which function as transcription factors regulating genes involved in cellular differentiation and proliferation[2][5]. Narrowband ultraviolet B (NBUVB) is a form of phototherapy that uses a specific wavelength of UV light to treat skin conditions such as mycosis fungoides and other forms of CTCL. The combination therapy of oral bexarotene with NBUVB has been shown to provide synergistic effects in treating plaque-stage mycosis fungoides and may reduce the required UV dose while improving clinical outcomes[3][4][6]. This combination is considered when monotherapies are insufficient or contraindicated.
