BF-derm1 is a novel recombinant protein-based topical drug candidate developed by the South Korean biotechnology company Bionanofiber for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. The drug is designed to specifically target and neutralize Th2-type chemokines, including C-C motif chemokine 17 (CCL17), also known as thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC), and C-C motif chemokine 22 (CCL22), also known as macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC). These chemokines are highly expressed in the skin lesions of atopic dermatitis patients and are responsible for the recruitment of CCR4-expressing Th2 cells, which drive the inflammatory response and pruritus. By inhibiting these pathways, BF-derm1 provides an anti-inflammatory effect comparable to topical corticosteroids but with a potentially improved safety profile for long-term use, as it avoids the systemic side effects and skin thinning associated with steroid treatments.
