Overview

BGC20-884 is a specialized borage oil formulation enriched with gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, 18:3n-6), specifically high in sn-2 GLA and low in monoenes. Developed by BTG International, it was investigated as a disease-modifying therapy for multiple sclerosis (MS). The drug acts by modulating dysregulated fatty acid metabolism and cytokine profiles; it promotes the production of the anti-inflammatory cytokine transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) while suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta). In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, high-dose BGC20-884 significantly reduced relapse rates and disability progression in patients with active relapsing-remitting MS.
