BGP-1951 is a small molecule benzamidine derivative originally developed by Biorex Research Management. It functions as an inhibitor of Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP-1), an enzyme that plays a critical role in DNA repair but can also trigger cellular energy failure when overactivated by oxidative stress. By inhibiting PARP-1, BGP-1951 prevents the depletion of intracellular NAD+ and ATP pools, thereby protecting cells from necrotic death and inflammatory damage. Preclinical research has primarily focused on its cytoprotective effects in models of ischemia-reperfusion injury (such as myocardial and renal ischemia) and diabetic complications, including retinopathy and neuropathy. While it shares structural and functional similarities with its better-known analog BGP-15, BGP-1951 has not progressed into late-stage clinical development and remains primarily a research compound.
