BHV-0223

BHV-0223 is a sublingual, orally disintegrating tablet formulation of riluzole developed by Biohaven for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Riluzole is a glutamate release inhibitor and is the only FDA-approved drug shown to extend tracheostomy-free survival in ALS. The BHV-0223 formulation uses Zydis technology to allow rapid dissolution under the tongue, providing an alternative for patients with dysphagia who have difficulty swallowing conventional tablets or liquids. Clinical studies demonstrated that 40 mg sublingual BHV-0223 achieves bioequivalent blood exposures to 50 mg oral riluzole tablets but with a lower total daily dose and potentially reduced risk of liver enzyme elevations[1][2][5][6][8].
