Overview

BI 1820237 is a novel, long-acting synthetic peptide that acts as an agonist of the neuropeptide Y receptor type 2 (NPY2R). It was developed as a potential anti-obesity agent. The drug was evaluated in phase 1 clinical trials in overweight and obese men, both as monotherapy and in combination with liraglutide. Results showed that BI 1820237 decreased energy intake and delayed gastric emptying, supporting its mechanism of action via NPY2R agonism. Adverse events were primarily gastrointestinal (nausea and vomiting), increasing with dose. The development of BI 1820237 for obesity has been discontinued following completion of phase I studies[1][5][6][9].
