Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BI 655088 is a potent and highly selective biotherapeutic antagonist of the chemokine receptor CX3CR1 (C-X3-C motif chemokine receptor 1). It is a VHH antibody (Nanobody) engineered to block CX3CR1, thereby reducing inflammation in atherosclerotic plaques. Preclinical studies demonstrated that therapeutic dosing of BI 655088 significantly inhibits plaque progression in mouse models of atherosclerosis. The drug was developed as an innovative approach to reduce inflammation and potentially decrease atherothrombotic events in patients with existing cardiovascular disease when added to standard treatments such as statins. Additionally, it has been investigated for chronic kidney disease and renal failure[1][2][6][7].
