BI 695502 is a biosimilar monoclonal antibody developed by Boehringer Ingelheim as a candidate to bevacizumab (Avastin). It functions as an angiogenesis inhibitor by binding to vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), thereby preventing VEGF from interacting with its receptors on the surface of endothelial cells. This inhibition blocks the formation and maintenance of blood vessels that supply tumors, slowing or stopping tumor growth. BI 695502 was evaluated in phase III clinical trials for metastatic colorectal cancer and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), demonstrating equivalent efficacy and safety profiles compared to reference bevacizumab. However, development of this biosimilar has been discontinued[1][2][4][5][6][8].
