BI 836880 is a humanized bispecific nanobody designed to inhibit both vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) and angiopoietin-2 (Ang2). It consists of two blocking domains that target VEGF and Ang2, as well as a third domain that binds to albumin, which extends its half-life. The drug is being developed primarily for the treatment of various cancers—including solid tumors and anal cancer—as well as eye disorders such as wet age-related macular degeneration. By simultaneously inhibiting VEGF-A and Ang2, BI 836880 aims to disrupt tumor angiogenesis more effectively than targeting either pathway alone. The molecule was originally developed by Ablynx and further advanced by Boehringer Ingelheim[1][2][4].
