Overview

BI8271 is a selective neuropeptide Y receptor type 2 (NPY2R) agonist developed by Boehringer Ingelheim. It is primarily investigated for its metabolic effects, specifically its ability to induce weight loss and improve glycemic control in models of obesity and type 2 diabetes. BI8271 mimics the action of peptide YY (PYY), a satiety-inducing hormone, and has been shown to significantly potentiate the weight-loss effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide. Beyond its metabolic role, preclinical research indicates that BI8271 may exert acute neuroprotective effects and enhance neurological recovery following ischemic stroke, potentially through mechanisms independent of its metabolic regulation.
