BIA1701 is a PET imaging agent developed by Bicycle Therapeutics for the visualization of solid tumors overexpressing Membrane type-1 matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP). It consists of a synthetic bicyclic peptide (Bicycle) that specifically binds to MT1-MMP, conjugated to a chelator cage that coordinates the positron-emitting radioisotope gallium-68 (68Ga). MT1-MMP is a zinc-dependent transmembrane enzyme involved in extracellular matrix degradation and is highly expressed in various invasive cancers. BIA1701 is designed to provide high-contrast imaging with rapid tumor penetration and fast renal clearance, facilitating the identification of patients suitable for MT1-MMP targeted therapies. It is currently in IND-enabling development, with clinical imaging studies conducted in collaboration with academic partners such as the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ).
