BIBB 515 is a potent and selective small molecule inhibitor of 2,3-oxidosqualene cyclase (OSC), also known as lanosterol synthase. OSC catalyzes the conversion of (3S)-2,3-oxidosqualene to lanosterol in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway. By inhibiting OSC, BIBB 515 reduces cholesterol synthesis and lowers LDL production in animal models. It has demonstrated dose-dependent lipid-lowering effects in normolipemic and hyperlipemic hamsters by reducing total cholesterol and LDL/VLDL levels primarily through inhibition of LDL production rather than increased catabolism. The compound was developed by C.H. Boehringer Sohn AG & Co. KG/Boehringer Ingelheim for potential use as a novel lipid-lowering agent[1][6][7].
