Overview

Bibenzonium bromide is a quaternary ammonium compound that acts as a centrally acting antitussive. It is primarily used to suppress non-productive (dry) coughs by inhibiting the cough reflex at the level of the medulla oblongata. Unlike opioid antitussives such as codeine, bibenzonium bromide does not typically cause respiratory depression or physical dependence. Historically developed by companies like UCB, it has been marketed in various international regions in oral formulations such as syrups and tablets. While it was once a common component of respiratory treatments, its clinical use has largely been superseded by newer agents in many modern pharmacopeias.
