Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BIBR 1048 MS Capsule E is a specific oral capsule formulation of dabigatran etexilate mesylate (BIBR 1048 MS), developed by Boehringer Ingelheim. The active ingredient is dabigatran etexilate, an orally active prodrug of dabigatran (BIBR 953 ZW), which is a potent, nonpeptidic small molecule direct thrombin inhibitor. Upon oral administration, dabigatran etexilate is rapidly converted to its active form, dabigatran, which specifically and reversibly inhibits both free and clot-bound thrombin (Factor IIa), a key protease in the coagulation cascade. This formulation was evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical study assessing the bioavailability of different oral formulations of dabigatran etexilate mesylate with and without co-administration of the proton pump inhibitor pantoprazole in healthy male subjects.
