Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BIBR 1048 MS Capsule I is an experimental oral capsule formulation of dabigatran etexilate (BIBR 1048), a small-molecule prodrug developed by Boehringer Ingelheim. Upon oral administration, dabigatran etexilate is rapidly converted by endogenous esterases into its active form, dabigatran (BIBR 953 ZW). Dabigatran is a potent, nonpeptidic, direct and reversible thrombin (Factor IIa) inhibitor that prevents the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, thereby inhibiting thrombus formation. BIBR 1048 MS Capsule I was specifically evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials to assess its bioavailability and pharmacokinetic profile in healthy subjects, including investigations into the impact of co-administered proton pump inhibitors like pantoprazole on its absorption.
