BIBW2 component B is the interleukin-2 (IL-2) secreting component of the BIBW2 allogeneic tumor vaccine system, developed by Boehringer Ingelheim for the treatment of advanced malignant melanoma. It consists of allogeneic melanoma cells that have been genetically modified via transferrinfection to express and secrete the human IL-2 gene. When administered intradermally, these cells serve as a source of melanoma-associated antigens while locally producing IL-2 to act as an immunostimulatory adjuvant. This localized cytokine production is intended to stimulate a systemic, tumor-specific immune response and augment clinical host responses against melanoma while minimizing the systemic toxicity typically associated with high-dose IL-2 therapy. In clinical trials, it was evaluated alongside Component A (non-transfected cells) to assess safety, tolerability, and the efficacy of the gene transfer process.
