Bicarbonate dialysate is a sterile solution used as the dialysis fluid in hemodialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). It contains sodium bicarbonate as its primary buffer to correct metabolic acidosis in patients with kidney failure. The mechanism of action involves diffusion of bicarbonate from the dialysate into the patient's blood across a semipermeable membrane during dialysis, thereby restoring acid-base balance. Bicarbonate dialysates are now preferred over acetate-based solutions due to better biocompatibility and improved patient outcomes.
