Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bicavera is a bicarbonate-buffered solution for peritoneal dialysis, developed and manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care. It is indicated for the treatment of patients with end-stage renal failure (chronic kidney failure) who require continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) or automated peritoneal dialysis (APD). The solution is uniquely formulated in a dual-chamber bag to maintain the stability of its components—separating the bicarbonate buffer from the glucose and electrolytes to prevent the precipitation of calcium carbonate and the formation of glucose degradation products during heat sterilization. Upon mixing the chambers immediately before use, the resulting solution provides a physiological pH and electrolyte profile, aiming to improve biocompatibility and reduce systemic acid-base imbalances compared to traditional lactate-buffered solutions.
