Overview
Biciclol is a synthetic biphenyl derivative used primarily in China for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C, as well as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). It is recognized for its hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, specifically its ability to reduce elevated aminotransferase levels (ALT/AST). The drug's mechanism of action involves stabilizing liver cell membranes, scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) to reduce oxidative stress, and inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-8 (IL-8). BIC-QR represents an extended-release formulation developed by the Peking Union Medical College Pharmaceutical Factory to optimize the pharmacokinetic profile and potentially reduce dosing frequency relative to the immediate-release tablets.
