Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bictegravir is a small molecule antiretroviral drug classified as an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI). It is used in combination with other antiretrovirals, most notably in the fixed-dose combination tablet Biktarvy (with emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide), for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. Bictegravir works by inhibiting HIV-1 integrase, an enzyme required for viral DNA to integrate into the host genome, thereby preventing replication and propagation of HIV. The drug was developed by Gilead Sciences and is indicated for use in adults and children weighing at least 14 kg (US) or 2 years old (Europe), either as initial therapy or to replace a stable regimen in virologically suppressed patients[1][5][6].
