Overview

Bicyclol is a synthetic small molecule hepatoprotective agent developed in China, primarily indicated for the treatment of various liver diseases. It is approved by the Chinese Food and Drug Administration for patients with abnormal alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels caused by chronic hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, drug-induced liver injury (DILI), and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease[3][4][8]. Its mechanisms of action include scavenging reactive oxygen species, inhibiting lipid peroxidation, stabilizing hepatic cell membranes and mitochondrial function, inhibiting inflammatory cytokines, upregulating Nrf2/HO-1 expression, modulating heat shock proteins, and reducing hepatocyte apoptosis[3][5][6][7][8]. Bicyclol also exhibits antiviral activity against hepatitis B virus (HBV), reducing viral DNA replication and secretion of HBV antigens[1]. It is based on derivatives from traditional Chinese medicine Schisandra chinensis. The drug has demonstrated a favorable safety profile in preclinical studies.
