Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Biejia Ruanmai Tang (鳖甲软脉汤) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula. The name translates to "Softening Vessels Decoction with Turtle Shell." It is not a single pharmaceutical compound but rather a multi-herbal decoction, typically containing turtle shell (Biejia, the carapace of Trionyx sinensis), along with other herbs. In TCM theory, Biejia Ruanmai Tang is used to soften hard masses, resolve blood stasis, nourish yin, and clear heat. Its main indications include conditions characterized by vascular rigidity or mass formation due to blood stasis and phlegm accumulation. The mechanism of action in modern terms involves immunomodulatory effects, anti-inflammatory activity, potential anti-tumor properties from its ingredients (notably Biejia), and improvement of microcirculation. The formula's primary ingredient—turtle shell—has been shown in pharmacological studies to possess immune-enhancing and anti-fibrotic effects[6][7][8]. However, as a classical TCM prescription rather than an approved pharmaceutical drug or standardized dietary supplement product in the Western sense, its composition may vary by practitioner or manufacturer.
