Bifenthrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide widely used in agriculture, public health, and residential pest control. It acts as a neurotoxin by interfering with the normal function of sodium channels in nerve cells, leading to paralysis and death of insects. Bifenthrin is effective against a broad spectrum of pests including ants, termites, mosquitoes (including malaria vectors), cockroaches, spiders, ticks, fleas, and many others. It has a long residual activity in soil and various formulations are available for different applications. Bifenthrin was first registered for use by the US EPA in 1985[1][3][5]. Its mechanism involves delaying the closure of sodium channels at nerve endings; this sustained depolarization disrupts neurotransmission[6]. While primarily considered a Type I pyrethroid (lacking an α-CN group), some studies suggest it exhibits mixed Type I/II characteristics[8].
