Overview

Bifidobacterium is a probiotic biologic being evaluated as a therapeutic intervention for major depressive disorder, particularly in hospitalized adolescents. Investigated by researcher Zhen-Hong Hu, the treatment is typically administered orally in capsule form and often used in combination with high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). The mechanism of action involves modulation of the gut-brain axis, where the bacteria alter the gut microbiota composition, stimulate the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, and reduce systemic inflammatory cytokines. Clinical trial data (ISRCTN16752763) indicates that an 8-week regimen of Bifidobacterium combined with rTMS significantly improves depressive symptoms as measured by the HAMD-24 scale.
