Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bifidobacterium is a genus of probiotic bacteria being investigated as a live biotherapeutic product for its potential metabolic benefits. Xijing Hospital is conducting clinical trials to assess the effects of Bifidobacterium, in combination with berberine hydrochloride, on lowering blood glucose and preventing the progression to diabetes in individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. [17] The proposed mechanisms of action include modulating the gut microbiota, improving gut barrier function, reducing inflammation and endotoxemia, increasing beneficial metabolites like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and potentially modulating incretin hormones such as GLP-1 to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.
