Overview

*Bifidobacterium adolescentis* ATCC 15703 is a specific strain of anaerobic, Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the genus *Bifidobacterium*. It is being investigated as a live biotherapeutic product (probiotic) for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly ulcerative colitis. The strain exerts its therapeutic effects by reinforcing the intestinal epithelial barrier through the upregulation of tight junction proteins like occludin and mucin family members (MUC2, MUC3). Additionally, it modulates the host immune response by stimulating the differentiation of T-regulatory (Treg) and Th2 cells, which leads to an increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, IL-4, IL-5) and a decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β). Research also indicates that this strain helps remodel the gut microbiota by inhibiting the overgrowth of potentially pathogenic genera such as *Akkermansia* and *Escherichia-Shigella*.
