Overview
**Bifidobacterium adolescentis bif-038** is a probiotic strain of Bifidobacterium adolescentis, a Gram-positive, anaerobic, non-spore-forming bacterial species naturally present in the human gut[1][4]. The strain DSM 29103 (also called BIF-038) is characterized by its ability to improve intestinal barrier function (evidenced by increasing trans-epithelial electrical resistance in Caco-2 cells) and to elicit a strong anti-inflammatory immune response (inducing secretion of >200 pg/ml of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and raising the IL-10:IL-12 ratio >1 in dendritic cells)[2]. Mechanistically, these effects involve modulation of the immune response and enhancement of epithelial barrier integrity. B. adolescentis strains also metabolize resistant starch and other plant-derived glycans, producing acetate and lactate as main metabolites. The strain is under investigation for potential benefit in conditions with impaired intestinal barrier or chronic inflammation, such as IBD, IBS, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity, NAFLD, NASH, autoimmune conditions, and some mood or cognitive disorders[2][1][3].
