Overview
Bifidobacterium animalis lactis is a subspecies of probiotic bacteria used as a dietary supplement, often incorporated into fermented dairy products and infant formula. [1, 3] It is a live microorganism classified as a biologic and probiotic. [1] The primary uses are to support gastrointestinal health and immune function. [1, 2, 5] Several commercially significant strains exist, including BB-12 developed by Chr. Hansen (now Novonesis) and HN019 by International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF). [1, 4, 9, 15] The mechanism of action involves colonizing the gut, modulating the existing gut microbiota, producing beneficial short-chain fatty acids, enhancing the intestinal barrier, and interacting with the host immune system. [2] Clinical studies have investigated its use in a wide range of conditions, including constipation, allergic diseases, and for alleviating side effects of other treatments. [14] It is available over-the-counter and is not approved as a pharmaceutical drug to treat or cure specific diseases. [1, 5]
