Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis Bbm-19 (Bbm-19) is a probiotic strain that was isolated from human breast milk. [1, 2] It is being investigated as a targeted psychobiotic intervention for sleep disorders, particularly insomnia. [1, 2, 15] As a live biotherapeutic product, Bbm-19 acts by modulating the gut-brain axis. [1, 3] Its mechanism of action involves remodeling the gut microbiota, which leads to increased levels of the neurotransmitters gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and serotonin in the colon, blood, and brain. [1, 3, 4] This regulation of neurotransmitter signaling, along with the normalization of inflammatory cytokine profiles, results in improved sleep parameters and a reduction in anxiety-like behaviors in animal models. [1, 2] Research in mice suggests its efficacy in improving sleep quality may be superior to lorazepam. [1, 2] The strain has been studied by researchers at Inner Mongolia Agricultural University. [4, 5]
