Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CECT 8145 (also known as BPL1) is a specific probiotic strain developed by Biopolis (now part of ADM) for the management of obesity and metabolic disorders. It is available in both live (probiotic) and heat-killed (postbiotic) forms. The strain was originally identified through high-throughput screening in *Caenorhabditis elegans* for its ability to reduce fat deposition. In human clinical trials, CECT 8145 has demonstrated efficacy in reducing visceral fat, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference in abdominally obese individuals, particularly women. It has also been studied in children with Prader-Willi Syndrome, where it improved abdominal adiposity, insulin sensitivity, and certain mental health symptoms. The mechanism of action involves modulation of the gut microbiome (notably increasing *Akkermansia* species) and enhancement of the insulin/IGF-1 signaling pathway, potentially mediated by its cell wall component, lipoteichoic acid.
