Overview

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CP-9 is a specific strain of probiotic bacteria that was originally isolated from human breast milk. It is developed by Glac Biotech and has received Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status from the U.S. FDA, allowing for its use in a variety of food products, including infant formula. Clinical studies have investigated its use as an adjuvant to phototherapy for neonatal jaundice. The proposed mechanism for this indication is the inhibition of β-glucuronidase-producing E. coli, which reduces the enterohepatic circulation of bilirubin, thereby lowering serum bilirubin levels and shortening the required duration of phototherapy. Beyond neonatal health, the CP-9 strain has also been studied for other health benefits, including weight management, improvement of lipid metabolism, and immune support.
