Overview

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis NJ241 is a specific probiotic strain being researched for its neuroprotective potential in Parkinson's disease (PD). It operates through the microbiota-gut-brain axis, where it helps restore intestinal microbial balance and increases the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Mechanistically, NJ241 elevates intestinal levels of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which in turn activates GLP-1 receptors (GLP-1R) and the PGC-1α signaling pathway in the substantia nigra. This pathway activation leads to reduced neuroinflammation, inhibition of glial cell activation, and protection of dopaminergic neurons from death, as demonstrated in MPTP-induced mouse models of PD.
