Overview

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis R7970 is a specific strain of probiotic bacteria being investigated for its therapeutic potential. It is currently the subject of a Phase 1/2 clinical trial in China to evaluate its efficacy and safety in the treatment of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD). [2, 3] The rationale for its use in kidney disease stems from the gut-kidney axis theory, which suggests that modulating the gut microbiome can impact systemic health. [1] Probiotics like B. animalis subsp. lactis may help by altering the gut microbiota, which can in turn reduce the production of uremic toxins and systemic inflammation, factors implicated in the progression of chronic kidney disease. [1, 4] In the trial, it is administered orally as a powder in a sachet. [2, 3]
