Overview

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis V9 (also known as Kex02) is a specific probiotic strain being investigated as a live biotherapeutic to enhance the efficacy of cancer immunotherapy. In clinical studies for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), it is administered in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and platinum-based chemotherapy. The therapeutic rationale is based on the gut-lung axis, where the probiotic modulates the gut microbiota, strengthens the intestinal barrier, and alters systemic inflammation and metabolite profiles. These changes are intended to prime the host immune system, potentially overcoming resistance to ICIs and improving overall anti-tumor responses.
