Overview

Bifidobacterium bifidum A218 is a specific strain of probiotic bacteria being developed as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) for the treatment of inflammatory and allergic conditions, most notably atopic dermatitis. Developed by the South Korean biotechnology company Athelas, A218 functions by modulating the host's immune response through the induction of regulatory T cells (Tregs) and the stimulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-10 (IL-10). This immunomodulatory action helps to suppress the Th2-biased immune response characteristic of allergic diseases, leading to a reduction in serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels and improvement in clinical symptoms. The strain is administered orally and has been evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials to assess its safety and efficacy in patients with atopic dermatitis, representing a novel microbial approach to managing chronic inflammatory skin disorders.
